Why does a page need one clear H1?

By the Sanctuary Growth Co team · Last updated September 11, 2026

Headings are the outline of your page: one H1 for the main title, then H2s and H3s for the sections beneath it. When that order is clean, Google and AI assistants can read your page like a table of contents and understand what it is about. When headings are used just to make text big, that outline breaks — and so does some of your page's clarity.

What is it?

Heading tags — H1 through H4 — are HTML labels that mark the hierarchy of a page. The H1 is the single main title, like the name of a service. H2s are the major sections under it, H3s are sub-points within those sections, and so on. Used correctly they form a nested outline. The problem is that many themes and page builders apply heading tags for visual size rather than meaning, so a page can end up with three H1s, or an H3 sitting above an H2. To a person it still looks fine; to a search crawler the structure is muddled.

Why it matters for your spa

Google and the newer AI answer engines lean on headings to figure out what each part of a page covers and which page best answers a query. A single, descriptive H1 tells them the topic in one line; a clean run of H2s tells them the supporting points. That clarity helps your pages surface for the right searches and makes them easier to quote in AI answers. For a spa, it also improves accessibility — screen readers navigate by heading — so tidy headings serve both your rankings and the real people visiting your site.

How we do it for you

We review each page and set exactly one H1 that names the page's topic, then arrange the remaining headings in order so nothing skips a level and nothing is a heading only for the sake of looking bold. Where a builder has forced extra H1s, we demote them to the right level and restyle them with CSS so the page looks identical while the underlying structure is correct. Nothing about your visible design has to change. The specific fixes we made appear in your plain-English report, and heading cleanup is part of every On-Page SEO Setup.

Can a page have more than one H1?

It can technically, but it should not. One H1 gives search engines and AI a single clear statement of the page's topic. We set exactly one per page and order the rest cleanly.

Will fixing headings change how my page looks?

No. We correct the underlying tags and use styling to keep the visual appearance the same. Your design stays put; only the structure improves.

Do headings matter for AI search?

Yes. AI answer engines read headings to understand and quote pages. A clean outline makes your content easier to surface and cite.

Is this the same as making text bold?

No. Bold is only visual. A heading tag carries meaning about structure, which crawlers and screen readers rely on.
