What are internal links and image alt text?
By the Sanctuary Growth Co team · Last updated September 11, 2026
Internal links are the links from one page of your site to another, and image alt text is the short written description attached to each image. Both are quiet, behind-the-scenes signals: links show search engines how your pages relate and pass ranking strength between them, while alt text tells crawlers — and screen readers — what a picture shows.
What is it?
An internal link connects two pages on the same website, like a service page linking to a related guide. Search engines follow these links to discover pages and to understand which ones you consider important; strength flows along them, so a well-linked page tends to rank better than an orphaned one. Alt text is the alternative description you attach to an image in the code. It is read aloud by screen readers, shown when an image fails to load, and used by search engines to understand what the image depicts, since they cannot truly see it.
Why it matters for your spa
For a spa site, thoughtful internal links guide both visitors and crawlers from your blog to your booking and service pages, spreading ranking strength to the pages that earn revenue and helping search engines map your whole site. Alt text does double duty: it makes your site usable for people relying on screen readers — a genuine accessibility obligation — and it gives your treatment photos a chance to appear in image search. Neither is flashy, but together they help crawlers and AI understand your content and help every visitor reach what they came for.
How we do it for you
We map your key pages and add relevant internal links with descriptive anchor text, so your most important pages are well-connected rather than stranded, and so link strength points where it helps. Then we write clear, honest alt text for meaningful images — describing what is actually shown, not stuffing keywords — and mark purely decorative images so screen readers can skip them. It is careful, page-by-page work, and the changes are listed in your plain-English report. Link and alt-text cleanup is part of every On-Page SEO Setup; see options on plans and pricing.
How many internal links should a page have?
There is no fixed number. The goal is relevant links that genuinely help a reader and connect related pages. We add them where they make sense, not to hit a quota.
Is alt text just for SEO?
No. Alt text is first an accessibility feature for people using screen readers. It also helps search engines understand images, but usefulness to real visitors comes first.
What makes good alt text?
A short, plain description of what the image actually shows. We avoid keyword-stuffing and mark decorative images as empty so they are skipped.
Will more internal links slow my site?
No. Text links add almost nothing to page weight. The benefit to navigation and crawling far outweighs any negligible cost.
